PRACTICE
Driven by a lifelong curiosity about belonging and what constitutes family, home, identity, and community, Alexis Emilia Studio was founded as a mobile laboratory for discovery. The international studio allows Alexis to gather materials, conduct research, and explore the traditional and innovative techniques learned from the societies she encounters during her travels. Her intuitively guided, multidisciplinary practice spans digital collage, textile art, sculpture, art jewelry, sound installation, and functional art as a means to investigate the ways art objects act as a medium through which collectors can embody their highest personal expression.
The work occupies the liminal space between new media and traditional arts while being mindful of the environmental impacts of art making. Through her art practice, Alexis honors the physical touch of the handmade and continues her graduate research into the connections between science and belief. Born in south New Jersey to a military family with roots in Oklahoma, North Carolina, New Jersey, Haiti, and Jamaica, Alexis spent her childhood in Europe and Asia where her preocupation with literature and film helped her imagine future worlds. Alexis is based in North Virginia and Thailand and is currently conducting experiments in East and South Europe.
